Private businesses under federal jurisdiction in Quebec will be made subject to Bill 101, the province’s language charter, whether the Trudeau government likes it or not, federal opposition parties have confirmed.

The Conservative Party of Canada, the Bloc Québécois and the New Democratic Party have confirmed to the Presse Canadienne either officially or informally that they intend to vote to support an amendment sought by the Legault government to the revision of the Official Languages Act.

That means article 54 of Bill C13,  which governs the use of French in private businesses under federal jurisdiction, will be amended to remove the initial proposal allowing those businesses in Quebec the choice between adhering to the Official Languages Act or Bill 101.

Quebec’s French language minister, Jean-François Roberge, on Monday criticized C13 for placing Canada’s linguistic minorities “on an equal footing,” meaning there are “worries over Quebec anglophones because they are a minority.”
