A bride’s decision to change her wedding dress code has drawn criticism online after she sent last-minute emails days before the big day.
A confused guest took to the popular forum Mumsnet to get others’ opinions on the situation.
In a post, she explained that she and her partner had already organized their outfits, but that they no longer corresponded to the new dress code.
Corresponding Hitched.co.uk, Save the dates should be sent out six to 12 months before the big day, while wedding invitations should arrive two to three months in advance. Dress code is expected to be included on the invitations to allow guests ample time to prepare.
However, this bride ignored etiquette with her dress code alert. The first email, received the night before the Post Office, called for “all women to wear a dress to a wedding and all men to wear day suits”.
The poster wrote: “I sorted my outfit months ago – pants, cami and jacket and [my partner] has chinos and a jacket.
“I thought she lost the plan, but it’s been a few years since I was invited to a wedding, so I was wondering if a new ‘norm’ had emerged that I wasn’t aware of.”
A second email, sent out the next day, urged guests to dress in smart casual attire for the evening reception.
“Surely that’s crazy five days before the wedding when invitations were sent out in January. If you really wanted a dress code, it shouldn’t have been in the invitation,” the poster wrote.
Responses to the popular posts were just as confused as the guest, calling the emails “madness.”
“If you are a relative of the groom I would contact them with a sham panic message explaining that you don’t think you will be able to attend now due to the recent dress code change,” wrote one user.
“If the dress code is in place, I’d throw the wedding away and enjoy the weekend and wear exactly what you want.”
Another agreed, adding: “Absolute madness. I would respond directly and say that you cannot sort these outfits given the short deadline and if she would rather not participate then wish them both a happy day.”
“The most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen,” summarized one user.
In an update, the guest confirmed that she will be attending the wedding in her original outfit, but has a plan B should her choice of dress raise any objections. She said that if there’s a problem, “she’s good to jump on and have a nice day in the city, especially since it’s going to be a great day weather-wise.”
