The California Highway Patrol Tuesday is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding a crash in Oasis that killed a 67-year-old woman and injured three others in a collision involving a big rig and a vehicle.
The crash was reported about 2 p.m. Monday at Highway 86 and Johnson Street, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
A Freightliner tractor, pulling two trailers, was traveling eastbound on Johnson Street, west of Highway 86. The Freightliner came to a stop for a stop sign at Highway 86. A Toyota was going southbound on Highway 86, north of Johnson Street, within one of two lanes, at an unknown speed, according to CHP news release.
The crash occurred when the Freightliner proceeded straight through the intersection, directly in front of the path of the Toyota.
The front of the Toyota crashed between both trailers that were being pulled by the Freightliner.
“The Toyota was lodged between both trailers, underneath the trailer’s tongue,” according to the CHP statement. “Four people were occupying the Toyota, including the driver. All four occupants had to be extricated by the fire department.”
The driver, a 63-year-old woman, and the right front passenger, a 67-year-old woman, suffered major injuries and were taken by helicopter to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The 67-year-old woman died on the way to the hospital.
The Toyota two rear occupants were also taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. The driver of the Freightliner suffered no injuries.
The CHP’s Indio Area office urged anyone with any information regarding the crash to call them at 760-772-5300.
