Victoria has been on a waiting list for shoulder surgery since 2018. The wait was prolonged because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I have three kids, so it’s been difficult with my injury and having to take care of them,” said Victoria, 30. “There are days when it hurts more than others, and there’s other days I can’t lift my arm. Sometimes I can’t lift my legs, too, since the part of my shoulder that is affected also affects my leg.”

Victoria was working at a seniors’ residence when she was injured. She worked there from 2015-2019, changing sheets and helping seniors bathe, get dressed and eat.

She was operating one of the machines that aid in moving or turning patients while they are in bed; she made an awkward movement that injured her shoulder.

Victoria was sent to get X-rays, but because she didn’t file a report with the Commission des normes de l’équité de la santé et de la sécurité du travail when the injury happened, she was not able to receive compensation.

“The pain didn’t start right away. It started a month later,” Victoria said. “I’m sad I can’t work, and the government assistance I have is very little for all of us. But I’m hoping once I get the surgery, I will be able to go back to school and work.”

Both of Victoria’s parents have died. An aunt and two sisters sometimes help, and Victoria receives injections in her shoulder to help with the pain.

She also recently moved into a new place, and with the Montreal Gazette Christmas Fund, she hopes to be able to buy an oven.

“Every bit counts,” Victoria said. “I’m happy to receive any help I can get.”
