A Texas man died Thursday shortly after drinking a mysterious liquid while being convicted of child sex abuse, officials say.

Edward Leclair, 57, was on trial in Denton, Texas, on five counts of sexual abuse involving an underage victim. He was out on bail until sentencing on Thursday.

“While those sentences were being read, he drank a bottle of water that he had at the attorney’s table,” said Jamie Beck, assistant district attorney for Denton County CNN.

“Our investigator noticed that he was drinking water,” Beck said. “He told the bailiff he might want to check on him. The bailiff did it. He was unconscious in the holding cell.”

The district attorney noted that the water appeared “cloudy.”

Mike Howard – Leclair’s defense attorney – said Leclair had a “long drink from a water bottle” while listening to the verdict. He wasn’t sure what was in his client’s bottle.

“Shortly after entering the holding cell, he began to vomit and emergency services were called,” Howard said.

Beck said a “medical procedure” was performed at the courthouse. Paramedics tried unsuccessfully to revive Leclair. The convicted pedophile was pronounced dead at 3:21 p.m. at Medical City Denton Hospital, according to preliminary records from the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

An autopsy has been ordered and the cause of death is listed as pending. The Texas Rangers investigate Leclair’s death.

“I can safely say that it was highly emotional for everyone involved,” Howard said Denton Record Chronicle. “We were shocked by that. It’s very emotional and even more so for the judges. You didn’t choose this. They were chosen and as we told them, serving on a jury and making sure the justice system works for the alleged victim and the accused is the cornerstone of being a citizen and making sure our government and society work .”

Howard wondered how the court would proceed.

“It obviously doesn’t happen often,” Howard said. “The judge in her 30 years and probably between us (also the public prosecutor’s office) over 100 years, [we] never experienced anything like this. The question is whether it is legal to … declare and have mistrial [the charges] dismissed, or is there another way to proceed?”

According to a search warrant affidavit, Leclair responded to a Craigslist personals ad in July 2016. He allegedly met a girl at a hotel for sex, and Leclair reportedly paid her $200. She is said to have emailed him a nude photo.

“After their first encounter, the victim told Leclair she was 14. Leclair continued to communicate with her about sex,” he said Denton Record Chronicle reported. “According to the search warrant, they had three other sexual encounters, one of which was at Leclair’s Frisco home.”

Two years later, Leclair’s friend Melody “Mel” Shae discovered communicating with the victim. She met the victim and told her that Leclar was “taking care of her,” according to the affidavit.

The affidavit also said, “Mel wanted to ‘help’ [her].’ Mel told her she could help the kid make a lot more money but she just had to go through Mel.”

Leclair was charged with child sexual assault on June 28, 2018, after the victim’s mother informed police that her daughter had been sexually assaulted. Convicted pedophile drinks liquid and dies in court
