An immunologist has warned that the new strain of Covid-19 can cause a variety of symptoms, including one that shows up at night.

Omicron BA.5 is a highly contagious sub-variant that raised concerns earlier this summer as it contributed to a new wave of infections around the world, including the UK.

Scientists have noted differences from previous strains, including the ability to reinfect people within weeks of having Covid.

A leading immunologist has now suggested it could trigger a new symptom in patients.

“An additional symptom of BA.5 that I saw this morning is night sweats,” Professor Luke O’Neill of Trinity College Dublin told an Irish radio station in mid-July.

“Isn’t that strange?” he added.

BA.5 led to an increase in the number of cases in a number of countries along with BA.4, also across Europe and in Australia, which has since declined. It also became the dominant variety in the US.

“The disease is slightly different because the virus has changed,” Professor O’Neill told Newstalk.

He added: “There is some immunity to it – obviously with the T cells and so on – and that mix of your immune system and the virus being something else can give rise to a slightly different disease, oddly night sweats are a feature .

“But very important, if you’re vaccinated and you get a boost, it doesn’t turn into a serious illness, the message is to keep reminding people about it.”

BA.5 was first discovered in South Africa in February, a month after BA.4 was identified in the same country.

Both then spread around the world, raising concerns about a resurgence of Covid infections, which could yet materialize as the colder weather arrives.
