Arsenal Women boss Eidevall reflects on Champions League win over Zurich by Michelle
Arsenal confirmed top spot in their Champions League group with a 1-9 away win against FC Zurich in Switzerland on Wednesday night. A hat-trick from Frida Maanum, a brace from Stina Blackstenius, a brace from Caitlin Foord and goals from Kim Little and Mana Iwabuchi secured a dominating victory for our Gunners and was a great end to 2022. Jonas Eidevall addressed the press after the meeting.
Jonas Eidevall is now in his second year with Arsenal and pleased with our growth in the Champions League competition over the past year saying: Last season’s experience was a factor and it’s not just what happens on the pitch but also off the pitch where we are making huge progress as an organisation. We are improving everything we do all the time in the way we travel and have our logistics, so we are becoming more efficient and better prepared. All these little details also make a difference in the end. Time is a factor, last season I was new to the club and now we are more settled and experienced more things together and we are more mature as a team. It shows progress.
With Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema out for the rest of the 2022-23 season with ACL injuries, Maanum, Foord and Blackstenius got on the scoresheet. Eidevall had this to say about player development and firepower recruitment: The end product is important with advanced players, I think it’s important to develop the existing players that we have. But it’s one of the challenges of this transfer window that we need to sign players that can give us an end product because that’s definitely one of the measurable factors that we’ve lost with these two players that we must take into consideration.
By starting Leah Williamson in midfield…
Eidevall moved Leah Williamson from her usual place as centre-back to midfield for the Zurich game, saying: I think it was the best starting XI we could come up with today, it was about me picking the best starting XI in my eyes.
When asked for his thoughts on 2022, we’ll have to wait a bit longer as he hopes to find time to do just that during this Christmas break saying: I don’t know yet it’s a difficult question at the moment. We live in an industry that’s game-by-game-by-game. We’ve had that focus and one thing I’m really looking forward to is having days off at Christmas to be able to think. I hope to be able to answer this question better in January!
Jonas has repeatedly said that Arsenal must be very active in the January transfer window with links established with Dutch international Victoria Pelova and rumors swirling around Brazil international Debinha, but there is no Confirmation yet from Arsenal.
We are looking forward to the January transfer window!
