In this article, you will get all information regarding Mac Mini 2012 – Anyone using an older Mac Mini as a home server? – MacRumors
As the topic says, I’m looking for someone who has turned an old mac mini into a home server? I recently moved into a new house and I think having a central server (for photos, music, movies, etc.) makes a lot of sense. We are an “Apple Family” with MacBook, iPhone, iPad, etc. laptops. to consume our media and surf the Internet.
Mac Mini 2012 Specifications:
The 2012 Mac Mini I own has been upgraded (16GB RAM, dual SSD kit, etc.) and I’d say it’s a pretty capable mini. This is the i5 version. I picked it up 4-5 years ago and used it as my main desktop computer for a few years.
I’m also into IT (DevOps engineer) so originally I thought of possibly setting up a Linux (Ubuntu) home server and going from there. So, a few questions that immediately come to mind:
1. What operating system should I use on a 2012 Mac Mini (macOS, Linux, etc.)?
2. Any particular “server” applications that I should download and configure?
3. I plan to run it headless (in a closet), so I need to make sure I can easily use SSH/RDP/etc. in the device.
4. I don’t have any big goals outside of central file/music/photo management at the moment.
Thanks in advance for everyone’s time and help, it’s much appreciated.
