Mill Valley detached garage gutted by fire

A detached three-car garage in Mill Valley was mostly destroyed during a fire this week.

The fire was reported just after 2 p.m. Monday at 2 Heuters Lane, said Doug Paterson, a battalion chief with the Southern Marin Fire Protection District. No one was hurt.

The fire started in a detached three-unit garage. The fire completely engulfed two of the garage units and badly damaged a third unit. It did not pose a threat to the surrounding area, fire officials said.

The fire was initially reported by a neighbor, Paterson said. The fire was extinguished by 2:21 p.m.

Firefighters conducted overhaul for about 90 minutes after the fire was put out. The occupants were assisted with the removal and storage of their items.

The damage was estimated at $175,000 for the structure and $50,000 for the contents. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
