Ithaca College in New York employs an “anti-racism institute” that will seek to dismantle “white supremacy” by separating white staff from minority colleagues in an optional weekly event.
The college will have staff segregated by “racial affinity groups” and meet on different days in the 2022-23 school year.
The meetings are designed to help participants “learn about recognizing, responding to, and resolving racial injustices in the freshman semester.”
In the second semester, the groups will be multiracial, according to the event’s website.

The university first asked staff to record their race in an official school database, calling the current data “incomplete”.
They then introduced the Antiracism Institute, which will split the participants by race and meet them in groups on different days
Many on social media were stunned by the event, calling it backwards and antithetical to fighting racism.
‘DR. Martin Luther King, Jr. is turning in his grave,” one user said, while another lamented, “Well, I think we’ve gone back to the 1950s.”
Another tweeted: “We are going backwards in the fight against racism here.”
To separate faculty members, the school recently required all staff to record their race on an official school database.
In a letter to staff, the school said that in order to be “a more diverse and inclusive institution,” they “want to have a fuller understanding of our current demographic profiles.”
The letter also said the school’s current data on staff “is incomplete, particularly with respect to race and ethnicity.”
The school then asked staff to “design the entries to best reflect your racial and ethnic identity.”
Outlining the programme’s “long-term vision”, according to the Anti-Racism Institute’s website, which is closed to the public except for those associated with the school.
They claim it was created “to prepare communities to dismantle racial systems and the culture of white supremacy that are embedded in the politics, pedagogy, and persona at Ithaca College.”
The Ithaca College plan is just the latest in a series of bold moves by American universities.
Tufts University was recently slammed after it launched diversity events, which are also designed to separate black and ethnic minority employees from their white colleagues.
Despite aiming to understand a “cross-cultural dialogue,” the University of Massachusetts split the two sessions – which were scheduled to start on October 17 – based on the race of the participants.

Part of the series, called Radical Healing, is intended to “provide an important, safe space for Tufts employees and faculty whose racial demographics are categorized as ‘BIPOC’.”
It is a place where Black, Indigenous and People of Color can come together to discuss how marginalized and oppressed people should live “free from discrimination, racism and oppression”.
The decision to separate session participants by race has sparked outrage within the school community and beyond.
One angry person wrote online: “This crap has to stop, we just have to stop tolerating this nonsense. Every single organization trying to do this needs to be sued immediately.’
Another person who says she is a Tufts alumnus added: “As a once proud Tufts alumnus, I am stunned that they encourage SEGREGATION and RACE SHAMING.
