Peru Arrests Six Generals As Part Of Probe Into Ex-President Castillo’s Transplant – Yahoo News – S Chronicles

LIMA (Portal) – The anti-corruption unit of Peru’s attorney general on Monday arrested six generals as part of an investigation into allegations that the government of ousted former President Pedro Castillo illegally promoted police officers and military personnel.

Police also seized “documents and equipment” in a raid on the home of Castillo’s former Secretary of Defense Walter Ayala, the Anti-Corruption Unit said.

Castillo, who was arrested earlier this month after lawmakers voted him out of office for trying to illegally dissolve Congress, is under investigation for interference. He faces six separate corruption charges, all of which he denies.

“As a result of these interventions, six of those identified were arrested. The procedure … includes 26 raids nationwide,” said the Attorney General on Twitter.

The left-wing ex-president is serving 48 months in custody while he is under investigation for ‘rebellion’.

The attorney general’s office said on Twitter that the jailed generals are under investigation for “allegedly paying to be promoted in 2021 with the approval of former President Pedro Castillo.”

Former defense minister Ayala criticized the house search and arrest of the generals.

“It was unnecessary because they didn’t find anything,” Ayala told reporters. “This investigation is over a year old … this is a show.”
