Significant number of homicides in 2022: “it may be a bit of a post-pandemic fed up” – OI Canadian

With the murder of a woman that occurred on the night of Monday to Tuesday in Pointe-aux-Trembles, Montreal records its 40th homicide of the year, a significant number according to a retired inspector.

“What we must remember from this 40th homicide is the year 2022 which is going to be a memorable year, but not in a good way, in terms of the homicides we have had,” said André Durocher in an interview. at LCN.

He also points out that the high number of firearms that were used during these murders.

“If we go back to 2019, it was six homicides that had been committed by firearm and as we speak, it is 19 or 20 if [celui de Pointe-aux-Trembles] was committed with a firearm,” said Mr. Durocher.

However, it remains to distinguish between the murders committed by street gangs and others, to fully understand the extent of the phenomenon.

The retired SPVM inspector believes that the pandemic may, however, be involved in this increase in the frequency of homicides.

“I’m not a trained psychiatrist or psychologist, but I think maybe it’s a bit of a post-pandemic fed up,” he says.

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic will be felt in the long term, he believes.

“We are coming out of the pandemic, there is inflation. It is certain that it is not foreign to the resurgence”, he declares.
