This isn’t entirely bad as Android has a weird way of dealing with this problem. Google on the other hand wants to get rid of these and for all. And they plan to fix this problem with the next version of Android. Who is Android 14.

In an open-source Android code, a tech editor called Mishall Rahman spotted that Google is working on a core model that will automatically update root certificates.

Android 14 root certificates will be updated from Google Play Store Root certificates

As it stands, root certificate updates come with the core system update. So, when the device stops receiving updates, there is a high possibility that the root certificates will also expire over time.

With the upcoming patch, root certificates can be automatically updated as part of Google Mobile Services. This keeps the device’s internet working all the time and of course it can continue to connect to any website no matter how old it is.

Root certificates are also trust-based. Every website securely connects to a mobile device using root certificates. This means that when root certificates expire, secure connections to websites and other applications become impossible.
